Chuck Up Close: On View at Acquired Taste

Chuck Close’s Self-Portrait (Yellow Raincoat) will be exhibited at Acquired Taste.

LOOK, CLOSE.

Yes, there is blue-chip art on view at Acquired Taste.

“A Chuck Close exhibited at HOMME!” said Amir Browder, gallery founder.

Special thank you to Chuck Close’s former personal chef, Kristopher Edelen, who is gracious to lend such a sentimental work to the show.

This example of Self-Portrait (Yellow Raincoat) belongs to Chuck Close’s later body of work, in which the artist translated his signature grid-based portraiture into richly layered digital prints. Built from a composite of tonal cells, the image resolves at a distance into a striking likeness while retaining its abstract structure up close—an approach that reflects Close’s sustained investigation of perception, process, and the mechanics of seeing.

Distinct from other impressions in the edition, this work was gifted directly by the artist to its original owner, Chef Kristopher Edelen, and is accompanied by a signed letter from the Chuck Close Studio confirming its origin. This direct line of provenance introduces a personal dimension to an otherwise widely distributed image, situating the work within Close’s technical practice and among his immediate circle.

Learn more about the remarkable story behind Chef Kristopher Edelen’s stewardship of ‘Self-Portrait (Yellow Raincoat)’ in his exclusive interview for the official Acquired Taste publication. Now available for purchase online and during gallery hours May 29-30.
